Imagine losing 157 pounds. That’s precisely what young Sam Rouen did on the Australian edition of The Biggest Loser back in 2007.
The reality show’s contestants compete to lose weight for a cash prize – the person who loses the highest percentage of body weight wins.
Sam was just 19 years old when he entered the competition. He had always been an overweight kid, but the problem had become dangerous to his health when he tipped the scales at 340 pounds.
A native of Campbelltown in New South Wales, Australia, Sam was being teased for studying sports science at his university.
While his studies no doubt made him aware of what constitutes a healthy lifestyle, he counted “Meat Supreme Pizza,” ice cream, and chocolate milkshakes among his favorite foods. His go-to drink – beer. Not ideal for anyone looking to drop a significant amount of weight.
In his Q&A with the show, young Sam lamented that he lacked the fitness and the confidence to keep up with friends and family. He also expressed a desire to gain a better quality of life and meet a partner.
Sam excelled on the show, winning that year’s competition and losing an amazing 46.48% of his body fat! Here he is at the end of the season, looking fit and fab:
But this isn’t the most shocking photo of Sam.
The newly fit young man went on to become a firefighter – and a very muscular one at that. In fact, Sam’s new look has earned him a place in a foxy firefighters calendar!
As you might imagine, his fiery new image made headlines all over Australia.
Interest in Sam reignited (pun intended!) in 2017 when he did a side-by-side 10 year Facebook post. At the age of 29, he showed off how far he’d come in a decade.
He captioned the photo:
“Wasn’t sure if I was going to do this post….. however. 10 years hey. What a time. So much has happened, good, bad, everything between. Highest highs and lowest lows. All I know is I’ve got some amazing people in my corner and I’m unconditionally appreciative of that ”
Remarkably, Sam is still self-conscious when taking off his shirt. But since the photo shoot was for charity, he toughed it out.
“I still don’t like taking my shirt off — even at the beach,” he toldThe Saturday Telegraph. “I’m still extremely self-conscious… I just tried to keep in mind that it was for a good cause.”
Briefly engaged in 2017, Sam is once again single (as far as we know) as the tabloids reported him looking for love on a dating app in 2018.
We really hope he included this photo of him holding a puppy in his profile. Who could resist?
Of course, his fellow firefighters are giving him a hard time about his new “modeling career”:
“I’ve been getting a bit of a ribbing from the guys at the station, they’ve been calling me ‘calendar boy’ and stuff like that. But it’s all in good fun.”
Now solidly committed to a healthy diet and a strict workout routine, Sam often posts gym photos and meal prep inspo to his Facebook page.
Sam’s steamy firefighter calendar photos have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for children’s hospital charities in Australia.
But he’s always honest about the amount of effort it took to get where he is and to maintain his new physique.
