Nuns don’t always have the best reputation for being fun-loving, but these 12 sisters are breaking down stereotypes.
Over 1.7 million people have now watched the video on YouTube which goes from solemn performance to grooving movements in just a few minutes.
As the sisters stand in formation, we hear the first notes of “I Will Follow Him” – a song you’ll probably recognize – which was made famous by singer Little Peggy March in the 1960s.
As the piano notes begin, it looks like it might be a slow routine. Hands come up and down slowly and one wonders what’s in store if so many people have already watched and enjoyed the video.
For anyone who remembers the movie Sister Act, starring Whoopie Goldberg, from the early 90s, you know the song has a bit of a kick halfway through.
Remember this scene?
Well, our nuns don’t disappoint. Once the slow part of the song is through, they rev up for some real moves.
In fact, they take their inspiration from Zumba classes, which by the look of some of those brightly-colored sneakers, they are more than ready for!
Now, there are plenty of commenters that don’t like the idea of nuns having fun, but these ladies don’t seem to care what anyone thinks.
As the tempo winds up, they are ready to bust a move!
Who says devotion, health, and entertainment can’t go together?
These women look like they’re having a great time dancing with one another dressed in their full habits, gloves and all.
Apparently, the Internet loves their dancing nun videos.
This recording of a group of nuns dancing at a concert in Krakow, Poland has garnered almost 2 million views in the 8 months since it was posted!
What can we say? When the Holy Spirit moves you, sometimes he moves you with some style.
As for our Zumba nuns, we can see that plenty of practice went into their synchronized routine.
The lighthearted performance is a joy to watch for anyone who loves to see people having a good time.
All of the women smiled throughout the performance and their happiness is infectious.
Can you watch without smiling just a bit?
Even though “I Will Follow Him” sounds like it might be religious in nature, it’s actually a love song. But there’s no reason you can’t interpret the “Him” differently. After all, the lyrics include:
“I love him
And where he goes I’ll follow
Nothing can keep him from me
He is my destiny (destiny)”
While nuns generally take vows of poverty, chastity, stability, and obedience (depending on the order they belong to), there’s nothing in there about not dancing!
In the U.S., nuns are also heavily involved in education and health – so what better way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity in keeping your body strong and healthy than to join a group of your friends for some dancing and celebration?
Check out their charming performance below and give yourself a good smile to last you throughout the day.
